SDP IWG: History

The SDP IWG emerged from the work of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Sport for Development and Peace and was conceived at the 2004 Athens Summer Olympic Games. Its inaugural meeting took place at the UN headquarter in New York on May 24, 2005 where Ministers of Sport, Youth and Development from 15 countries, Directors of UN agencies, and leading NGOs in the field of Sport for Development and Peace, met to discuss the development potential of sport with a particular focus on realizing the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
